Chapter 12

His Vow

Ed watched the woman he loved as she removed herself from the table to start their dinner dishes.  She was so quiet this evening, she seemed distant and just plain sad to him.  He’d tried to question her, but she told him she couldn’t talk about what was bothering her yet.  She’d been like this since her superior ushered her off to his office.  She never came back to join him in the library and he’d grown apprehensive of what had happened in that meeting.  The boy stood up from the table and walked over to help her with the dishes.  He’d noticed how she’d been keeping her gaze from him all through dinner and he longed to see her face.  Ed gently put his hands over hers in the sink, as he stood besides her, hoping to steal a view of her pretty features.  Instead, her movement stopped and she just stood there, frozen.  Then he felt something wet fall on the top of his flesh hand.  It startled him, ‘Was she crying?’ he thought as he felt unease build in his chest.  “Melissa, what is it, please tell me” he softly pleaded as he reached around the girl to hold her.

Melissa turned to the boy; her tears were falling freely for the second time that day.  She let him hold her as she lowered her face into his shoulder.  She knew she had to tell him now.  “Oh Ed, I have some terrible news…” she sobbed.

“W-What,” he asked; he was starting to get a sick feeling in his gut.

She lifted her head to look directly into his eyes as she told him point blank, “I’ve been transferred…to Drachma.  I leave the day after tomorrow.”  She saw the disbelieving look in his eyes turn to the realization of what her words meant for the two of them.

“Don’t kid me, Melissa,” Ed responded, hoping there was more to the story, something that would slow down the lump that was rising in his throat.  Her sad face and newly falling tears told him otherwise.  “It can’t be…why…why would you get transferred, just like that?” his voice shook as the volume increased.  His anger was winning the battle for dominating his emotions.

Melissa sensed his anger and let go of him.  He was going to make this more difficult than she’d wanted it to be.

“You have to fill out paperwork to be transferred, right?” he accused her as he watched her walk away from him and into the living space of her apartment.  “Don’t you?” he demanded an answer as he continued, “I mean, you have to ASK to be transferred, right?” His voice almost echoed off the walls it had gotten so loud.

Melissa turned around to face him, her own anger now showed in her face.  “Yes, Ed, you have to fill out paperwork, you have to ask,” she spat out.  “Don’t make this harder for me” her voice softened as she spoke.

“For you?  What about me?  How could you do this to us Melissa?” the level of his voice lowered and faltered as his own tears filled his eyes.

“Ed, I put in for the transfer a long time ago…probably four or five months ago.  I didn’t even know you then.  I just wanted to get…away.” She stopped herself from spilling the whole circumstance around it, bringing up her affair with Roy would only make the situation worse.

The boy stood there looking at her floor, bewildered.  He swiped away at the tears running down his cheeks and said, “So, you can stop it, right? You can tell them you don’t want to go now, right?” with the last word he looked back up at her and started to walk towards her.  He saw her head shaking in disagreement with his question.  “Drachma is too dangerous for you.  I won’t let them send you there.  I’ll stop it…you want me to stop it, right?” he said as his need to protect her took hold of him.

She looked up at him, he appeared so determined, ‘He actually thinks he can do something about this’ she thought ‘well, if it makes him feel better, may as well let him try’.  “Sure, Ed, I’d love it if you could stop it” she told him, fully believing there was no point in it.  The boy ran to her, wrapped his arms around her, and buried his face in her neck.

“Please, together we can fight this.  We’ll find a way.  I won’t let them take you away from me and I certainly won’t let them put you in danger.” He spoke, more resolute than ever to alter the course of their lives.

She reached down and pulled his face to hers as she kissed him gently.  In the meantime, they still had two nights together and she didn’t want to waist the time they had left arguing and putting energy into a futile effort.  She’d much rather spend time exploring what she could of his body.

Ed was surprised by her aggressive behavior; he felt her kisses becoming heated and his own passions flared as her hands roamed his body.  She grabbed him by the hand and led him into her bedroom.

The next morning, Ed woke sleepily as the rays of sunshine entered Melissa’s bedroom window and lit up his face.  He turned, probing the bed for her soft body with his hands.  ‘Where is she?’ he asked himself.  Not feeling her beside him, he raised his head and tried to focus his eyes on the blankets next to him.  He still didn’t see her anywhere, so he lifted himself up from the bed and continued to scan the details of her room.  She wasn’t there.  “Melissa!” he called out, no answer.  He started to feel distress as he pulled himself up and out of her bed.  He reached for his pants and clumsily put them on.  He walked out of the room and into her main living area, still searching for her.  He noticed a small piece of paper on the counter in her kitchen next to the coffee maker.  The boy walked over to it, long blonde hair hanging loosely over his shoulders.

He read the words on the paper, ‘Ed, sorry for leaving so early.  As you can imagine, if I do need to leave tomorrow I have a ton of things to do today.  I’ll see you later.  Let me know how things go.  Love, Melissa.’  He sat down with the note in his metal hand and rested his forehead on his flesh hand.  He’d forgotten all about the transfer that threatened to take her away from him.   He had to succeed at reversing the transfer, or he’d have to find a way to go with her.  His mind plundered through the possibilities, not having her with him was not an option.  He was so deeply in love with her, he didn’t want to imagine her living so far away from him and in such a treacherous place.  Doubts started to plague his mind, what if he was unsuccessful?  A picture of her waving to him from a train window pierced his mind; he was standing on the platform, unable to wave back.  The sting of tears flooding his eyes interrupted the dreadful image in his mind.

Ed’s fury rose as he vowed once again to stop the current plans.  He pounded his flesh fist down on the table and hit it hard enough to knock over the salt and pepper shakers Melissa kept there.   He rose from the table in a rage and rushed to dress himself.  He hurried out the door, impatient to take action to keep his lover by his side.
The story continues... setting up for the grand finale:)
